Every Shift. Every Stroke. A Greater Purpose.

Frontline nurse. Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner. Endurance athlete.
Building a movement through adversity, resilience, service, and purpose.

Meet Paul

Paul McArdle is a frontline neurological nurse, a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, an endurance athlete, and founder of Shift to Shore.

Based in Glasgow, Scotland, his mission is to inspire others through resilience, reinvention, service, and purpose—proving that no matter what stage of life you are in, it is never too late to begin again.

Through every shift worked, every challenge faced, and every stroke taken, Shift to Shore is building something far greater than a swim.

“Purpose is not found in comfort…
It’s built through adversity, service, and showing up when it would be easier not to.”

Paul McArdle, Founder of Shift to Shore

Shift to Shore was never created simply to swim the English Channel.

It was born through loss, adversity, frontline healthcare, reinvention, and a belief that no matter what life throws at you, it’s never too late to begin again.

From losing my mother at a young age, to rebuilding my life, qualifying as a nurse at 40, and serving on the frontline in neurological care… every chapter has shaped this mission.

Every early morning. Every night shift. Every cold-water session.

Every stroke carries a purpose far greater than the swim itself.

Why Shift to Shore?

The Challenge

At the heart of Shift to Shore lies one of the world’s most demanding endurance challenges — the English Channel swim.

Covering approximately 21 miles (34 km), swimmers face freezing temperatures, powerful tides, exhaustion, unpredictable weather, sleep deprivation, and hours alone in open water.

For many, it represents the ultimate test of physical and mental resilience.

For me, this challenge is about far more than reaching the French shoreline.

It represents every setback overcome, every shift worked, every early morning, and every lesson learned through adversity, healthcare, discipline, and personal growth.

Every stroke carries a greater purpose.
